Last March, I was thinking of visiting some places for the Holi celebration and taking photos, and a few more places immediately came to my mind. My idea is to visit a place which is less known and where you can see a more authentic way of celebration rather than just playing with colours.
I was talking to Jagjit casually about the same who is a good friend and he suggested I must visit Deotha village and experience the Holi festival and first reaction was where is this place and what kind of celebration we will experience? The reply was “Trust me” you will have a unique experience.
The suggestion was to take a flight to Chandigarh or Bhuntar (Kullu) and drive to Deotha from there. Deotha is a small village amidst the foothills of the Himalayas, Himachal Pradesh. Finally, I decided to take a train to get down to Chandigarh, upon my arrival we started to drive towards our destination, which was roughly 4-5 hours of the drive.
I had no clue where we were going to stay during the visit. I asked Jagjit and he told me everything had been arranged and a big surprise was waiting for me. We reached late evening in the dark and there was no power in the village due to some technical issue. We had a quick dinner and slept as I was tired from 24 hours of train journey and 5 hours of drive.
In the morning I woke to the music of birds song, and when I realised where I was and what surprise was given to me by Jagjit. I was in a place called “BhigaSa”. A small boutique place recently started by Jagjit and his friends.

Here is how I describe this place. Away from tourist crowds, Deotha village offers a genuine village experience, while BhigaSa provides all essential comforts. Locally grown food adds flavour, and friendly staff ensure a homely atmosphere, complemented by the company of Simba, the adorable dog. A haven for creatives seeking solace from bustling schedules.
I must say a place for creative people who need time to regain energy from their busy schedules.
So next was to go and be a part of the Holi festival in the village. I must say Culture is the vibrant tapestry of human expression, weaving together traditions, beliefs, art, and customs into a rich mosaic of diversity. It fosters unity amidst differences, celebrates heritage, and inspires creativity. Culture is the heartbeat of society, connecting generations and shaping identities with its enduring beauty and profound significance.

The Holi festivities in Deotha village reach extraordinary heights in Himachal Pradesh India. Locals honour Devta Bungdu Mahadev in a revered manner, embarking on a chariot journey from the deity’s abode in the mountains to the village’s Holi grounds. Amidst dancing and singing, they revel in the vibrant hues of gulal throughout the festival.

I was privileged to be part of this festival and here you too can enjoy a festivity mood and visual journey.
